What is Winter Drumline?
An indoor percussion ensemble or indoor drumline consists of the marching percussion (or battery) and the front ensemble (or pit) sections of a marching band. Indoor/winter drumline marries elements of music performance, theater, and dance into one activity. It has become a completely unique activity that combines many of the best elements of a jazz band, symphonic ensemble, marching band, theater production, stage, musical, and sports team. Competitive indoor percussion is an exciting branch of the pageantry arts with approximately 15,000 young people participating in ensembles in the United States, Canada, Japan, and Western Europe. Thus, indoor percussion is a blend of multiple co-curricular and extra-curricular activities that produces "The Sport of the Arts."
A valuable experience for indoor percussion performers is an interaction with students from other communities throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia. The success of this activity is rich in those areas and growing in Europe and Asia. This social and competitive exchange with groups of their own age from different backgrounds, lifestyles, and educational experiences adds another facet to their self-perception while creating lasting friendships!
Percussion ensembles have the latitude to perform at a local level with much the same scope as an athletic team, or they may choose to expand and include performances in other parts of the country affording an opportunity for trips, visiting historical and cultural sites. A combination of experience with challenges and stimulates growth on so many levels:

What is Modulation Z?
Modulation Z is a winter drumline group consisting of high school aged students from the O’Fallon, MO and St. Peters, MO area. Started in 2010, Modulation Z was created for those students who did not have a winter program at their “home” schools as a means for them to participate in this fun and exciting experience. It was originally conceived to be a one-time thing or something that would occur every so often. But, due to the overwhelming positive feedback from students, parents and the community, it was apparent that “Mod Z” should take place every year.
Although the 2017 season was only the 4th year competing in the WGI World Circuit, they have already achieved Finalist status at the World Championships finishing 9th and 4th overall in 2015 and 2016 respectively as well as winning the gold medal in 2017. Modulation Z auditions are open to anyone in grades 9 through 12 with the desire and drive to work hard and achieve success. The average age is 16 and a half. Any student from a seasoned percussionist to a freshman woodwind player can find a spot in Modulation Z!
Modulation Z is a performance group which attempts to do much more than provide a competitive performance opportunity for students or entertainment for an audience. Through the experience with our group, students will learn useful life skills, discipline, leadership skills, goal setting, and conflict resolution skills among others. The Modulation Z curriculum includes opportunities for students to exercise their potential, not only as musicians, but as complete human beings. Modulation Z invites anyone to become a part of our performance family.
Modulation Z strives to make a positive impact on our community with our philosophies and practices as well as by playing for several business openings, children’s activities and music camps for special needs students every year.
